Point of Sale (POS) Systems
A point-of-sale system (POS) replaces a cash register with a computerized system for intake and sale of inventory. It usually includes a touch-screen monitor, the computer itself often integrated into the monitor; also, a UPC bar code scanner, secure cash drawer, magnetic card reader and a receipt printer. Other peripherals are available, such as a digital scale for deli operations, etc.
The system may be connected to either a telephone line or, preferably, a high speed internet connection for processing credit card and other authorizations.
Even more important than the hardware is the POS software that runs day-to-day sales, inventory intake and maintenance, reports and other operations. This software will be included with the system purchase. Systems are installed and set up by local installation technicians.
